Worthington Schools Board - August 4, 2025

School starts August 13th, health insurance costs rising, and new pool management agreement approved

Hello Worthington! Here's your recap of what happened at August 4th's Board of Education meeting.

School Starts August 13th - Construction Projects on Track

Superintendent Dr. Trent Bowers confirmed that school will begin as scheduled on August 13th for grades 1-9, with kindergarten assessments starting that day. Grades 10-12 join on August 14th, and all kindergarteners start August 15th. Despite ongoing major construction at both high schools, Dr. Bowers assured the community that Worthington Kilbourne High School will be ready to welcome freshmen on time, though some areas and entrances will remain unavailable during the fall.

The Welcome Center has been busy this summer processing 218 new student enrollments, 738 kindergarten enrollments (up from 693 last year), and 271 intra-district transfer requests. Families can find all back-to-school information at the top of the Worthington Schools website.

Health Insurance Costs Spike After Years of Low Increases

The district is facing a challenging year with medical insurance costs potentially rising 15% or more, a significant jump after averaging just 3.13% increases over the past decade. Claims have been significantly higher than expected, and inflation is finally hitting multi-year contract renewals, especially in rapidly expanding central Ohio healthcare facilities.

Per negotiated employment agreements, employees are responsible for 70% of premium increases above 8%. The insurance committee met last week and has another meeting scheduled for August 12th to review additional cost-reduction options.

New Cell Phone Policy Takes Effect

The board gave final approval to updated policies reflecting Ohio's new Senate Bill 158, which prohibits student cell phone use in schools. While middle schools have been cell phone-free for three years, this represents the biggest change for high school students. The district will use messaging like "phones off, friends on" and "disconnect to connect" to emphasize in-person communication.

There was discussion about smartwatch restrictions, which currently only apply to grades K-5 where teachers reported communication disruptions. Middle and high school smartwatch policies may be revisited based on teacher feedback.
